Arrival in Bangkok

31 Aug

Eric and I missed our tour of North Korea. It might haunt us forever, but whatever, there was nothing we could do about it. We’re on our way to Bangkok for some fun. We took off at 5:30ish on Thursday, August 30, roughly 58 hours after we were initially supposed to leave South Korea. At least we finally left.

When we eventually landed in Bangkok, it was my second time there, which puts me in the company of many a dirt bag who have made multiple trips to Bangkok. Luckily, it was Eric’s third time there, which officially puts him on the list of ‘dirt bags to avoid in the world’. When you know how to navigate the back streets of Bangkok to a ping pong show, which he does, you’re officially “that guy.” And you don’t want to be “that guy,” but he is.

Khao San road is the party street of Bangkok. We arrived at midnight with the party in full swing and no signs of stopping till the sun crept above the horizon. We joined in.

We had planned to pre-game on the airplane while watching The Hangover, but the budget airline we flew told us we had to put away the bottle of whiskey we brought on the plane. They did’t sell whiskey, and we weren’t allowed to drink anything brought onboard. Not what we wanted to hear.

You can’t walk into Khao San Road in the middle of the night sober or you’ll hate everyone there. They are on a different level. You at least have to be approaching their level to tolerate them. So, we bought some sodas in the airport and enjoyed cocktails in the back of the cab on the way to our hostel. At one point, I spilled some whisky while attempting to mix it in my coke. The cab driver apologized to me for hitting a bump in the road. Thailand is amazing.

By the time we finally got there, we were appropriately buzzed. We dropped our bags off and followed the noise of slightly outdated songs to Khao San Road in search of good times and stories to one up Alan when we see him again in Nepal.
